Put Things Where They Go to Stay Organized

Today’s post is just a quick, simple recommendation to help you in the element of organization. It’s to consistantly put things where they go. Whenever you take something out, immediately put it back in its designated place when you’re finished with it, and when you bring something into your space, find an appropriate spot for it.

Why bother putting things away, right away?

This habit will help save you time. When cleaning your spaces, you won’t have to start by putting everything away and will be able to jump straight in to just cleaning. It will also save you from waisting time searching for stuff. If you routinely put things back where they go, you’ll know where everything is. I know I’ve wasted a lot of time searching for items like my keys, documents, shoes, and sunglasses.

Having everything put away in its place will also create a calmer ambience. On the other hand, clutter on counters and floors creates a disorderly atmosphere. As I suggest habitually putting things in their place, I certainly don’t mean to suggested that I do this 100% of the time, but I will state that I find I can think clearer, get more accomplished, and am just in a better mood when my spaces are clutter free.

Another benefit of this habit is it keeps you from procrastinating. If you allow yourself to pile up mail and other items that need to be dealt with, putting those obligations off is easy. Alternatively, if you address mail and other items as they come into your space, it helps you to stay on top of your obligations.

What if you share spaces with others?

Of course, if you live with others, you have to get everyone on board to make this work. We obviously cannot control others, but talk with your spouse, partner, or roommates to see if they are willing to join you in keeping things in their places. If you have children, teach them where things belong and that when they are finished with something you expect them to put it back where it goes. You can even put pictures or written labels to help them remember where objects they use go. To keep your sanity, remember the saying “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Just try to keep encouraging yourself and everyone along.

It might seem like not putting things away is saving you time in the moment, but, in the long run, the habit of putting things where they go right away will save you time, keep your spaces organized, and help keep you on top of life’s demands.
