The mountains of Western North Carolina are one of my favorite places on this planet. My heart is heavy for everyone impacted by the devestation of Hurricane Helene there and in all the other areas hit by the storm. Watching the news unfold left me feeling helpless, wondering what I could do that would possibly have any impact on such an overwhelming situation.
Then a lady passing by me in a grocery store aisle gave me some perspective. For no good reason I was not in the best mood, after all I was safe and at a grocery store with electricity, food, and water which some could use desperately right now. When the lady passed me in my less than cheery mood, she gave me the kindest smile and said some pleasantry. Instantly this completely shifted my mood. What she did cost nothing and didn’t take much time or effort, but it sure made a difference in my day.
So, I am taking that interaction to remind myself that no matter how small or insignificant what I’m able to do may seem, any action to help matters. In the aftermath of a catastrophe or just in everyday life, if we all consistently make an effort to be kind and help others, all those small acts will combine to something big.
