A Workout With It All

It’s important to have a well rounded fitness routine that includes cardio, strength training, and stretching. Just focusing on one aspect deprives you of the benefits of the others. Following is a list of some of the different benefits of the three according to the Mayo Clinic. I’ve added a link to the full article for each if you’re interested in learning more. Understanding the positive impacts exercising has on you can be a good motivation.

This week I’m going to recommend Bipasha Basu’s Unleash 30 Minute Fat Burning Cardio Workout for the element of health. I found this workout many years ago and still mix it into my weekly workout routine. I enjoy it because, though it’s cardio focused, it incorporates toning and stretching into the workout. So, it’s a great way to get in some cardio along with toning and stretching in one session.

Cardio https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/aerobic-exercise/art-20045541

  • Strengthens your heart and improves your arteries
  • Lowers your blood pressure and helps control blood sugar
  • Keeps extra weight off
  • Strengthens your immune system
  • Positively impacts your mood

Strength Training https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/strength-training/art-20046670

  • Keeps and improves muscle mass (Muscle mass decreases as we age, so it’s important to build and maintain it.)
  • Strengthens your bones and protects your joints
  • Increases your metabolism
  • Can help with chronic conditions such as back pain and arthritus
  • Can decrease the risk of falls

Stretching https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/stretching/art-20047931

  • Improves your ability to perform various physical activities
  • Lowers your risk of injuries
  • Increases blood flow to your muscles
  • Helps muscle function
  • Benefits your joints’ range of motion

The workout begins with a nice warm-up, followed by cardio sets that get your heart pumping. Squats, lunges, mountain climbers, and pushups are mixed into the sets. It’s not a major strength training session, if that’s what you’re looking for, but the moves will help tone you up. Then the workout ends with a cool-down and stretching. Depending on where you are in your physical fitness, the workout may be challenging at first (it was for me). When needed, just march in place for a break and continue when you’re ready. If you keep at it, you’ll be able to do the entire workout before too long. Here’s the link to Bipasha Basu’s workout if you’d like to give it a try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUrrN6cEBRQ
