Indulge Your Senses and Elevate Your Surroundings

I believe it’s important to find ways to fill your life with joy every day. Indulging your senses and elevating your surroundings to create spaces that lift your spirits can help you do this.

Your surroundings give off an energy that impacts you. Clean, organized spaces that incorporate things you love tend to have positive effects, while messy, dirty spaces cluttered with things you don’t like tend to have a negative effects.

The following are ideas from the “Joy” chapter of my workbook, Target Your Life: A Guide to Get You from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, to evaluate and think of ways to bring more joy into your life through your surroundings and senses. (You can get a free digital version of the workbook at the bottom of my about page. It’s also available for purchase at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D367TY6F if you’d prefer a physical copy.)

First, list the areas where you spend most of your time and you can change. Then, do an assessment ranking them on a scale of 1 to 5 for how clean, organized, beautiful, and uplifting each feels to you. Click here for the ranking printout.

Next, list the spaces again and reflect on ways to improve them referring to your rankings. Do you need to schedule some time to clean and organize any areas? Could some of your spaces use objects that inspire you, or could something beautiful bring more joy into your surroundings? How can you incorporate your five senses? Think of pleasing sights (i.g. flowers, paintings, or favorite colors), smells (i.g. essential oils or fragrant plants), sounds (i.g. music, instruments, or chimes), textures (i.g. rugs, knit blankets, or velvet pillows), and even tastes (i.g. bowls of fruit or potted herbs) and ways to add those to your spaces. Click here for a printout to write your ideas.

Now that you have your ideas laid out, create action steps to nurture your senses and improve your surroundings over time in order to bring more joy into your life. Click here for a printout to list your steps.
